Casillas Cigars began in Sacramento California in in the late 80’s where Macario Casillas and his sons ran Casillas Cigars store and lounge on 16st in downtown Sacramento. That is where Macario cemented his brand Casillas Cigars as one of the freshest hand rolled cigars the industry has to offer. During the cigar boom of the mid 90’s was the perfect environment to establish a well famed brand knows as Casillas Cigars.
In 2004 Macario began to In 2004 Macario began to plan his move to Nicaragua to run the factory that supplied several stores in California, Nevada and Nebraska at the time.when my father explained to me what his friend Macario had proposed to him.
So, in late 2004 I up rooted from Miami Fl, and made Sacramento my new home, and on February 18th of 2005 under the guidance and blessings of Macario Casillas, Casillas Cigars of Citrus Heights opened its doors. That very fist month we made the rent, we didn’t make the light bill we didn’t make the phone bill but at least we knew our doors would stay open, even if we had to sell in the dark. We quickly became a member of our local municipality participating in local events and charity gatherings.
Soon after opening we experienced a decline the quality of the cigars we were receiving, and Macario’s nephew found another supplier and changed the name of the Casillas Cigars on 16th and V Street. This created tensions in the Casillas family and Macario promptly returned from Nicaragua in the winter of 2005. I personally drove Macario all over Northern California and went cigar store to cigar store and hand wrote, filled and delivered all the sales we made together that winter while my father Pedro was watch the store and sold out of there. Together us three helped fund the opening of the Casillas Cigars at 2020 16 Street. 2006 Macario and his sons sold the store at 2020 and Macario came to the shop we owned and gave us information on his suppliers and let us know he sold the shop at 2020 with the name, and this is the reason there are two Casillas Cigars in the Sacramento area that are not affiliated.
After the news of losing our supplier, I quickly began to buy cigars form manufacturers out of South Florida. We quickly noticed that these cigars did not compare to the cigars Macario built his brand upon. I went back to my home state of Florida to scour through many suppliers and all ended in disappointment. It was in 2006 that I met a young man from Nicaragua in Reno Nevada named Marvin. Marvin used to live in Esteli Nicaragua rolling cigars, Marvin’s entire family rolled cigars. By the grace of God like a ray of light a small cigar store in Sparks Nevada had closed down. I then decided to take the lease over and open Don Dimas Cigars in Feburary of 2007, that same year my new friend and business partner cigar roller extraordinaire connected me with his former employer in Esteli and I made my first of many trips to Beautiful Nicaragua. I returned with some of the finest hand selected tobacco leafs. I then registered as a manufacture in the United states, and we began production of our own in Reno Nevada, supplying both the sparks store and the Citrus Heights location.
On April 9th 2009 cigar manufacturing taxes jumped One Thousand percent 1000% from $43.00 dollars for every 1000 cigars rolled to $402.00. We ceased production right then and there. However, we continued to supply our stores through experienced and seasoned manufactures in Nicaragua.
Later that same year we began to explore Dominican tobacco, much to our surprise we were impressed and after some blend searching and trial and error we came to a blend that has been consistent, solid and true. Luis our quality control inspector has over 50 years of experience and was employed the famous father and son team Arturo Fuente for 22 years prior to venturing out on his own.
